June 23, 2007 -- Got steering arms from Spidertrax so I can set up the steering. They are 4140 chromoly, heat treated, so they are nice and light. Spidertrax stuff is art! I'm really impressed.
This is the arm mounted on the knuckle.
June 27, 2007 -- Got home from work late this morning, this is about all I got done...prepping the housing for paint...
...and here it is painted and in the Jeep.
Big brown van came and brought these from Spidertrax. Prototype 2 piece axles from heat treated 4340. The U-joints are Bobby Long's.
What makes these unique is that they are 2 piece shafts, so that there is no loss of strength where the shaft meets the yoke. This wouldn't seem significant to me, but read Billavista's article on www.pirate4x4.com and it is pretty well explained in lay terms. Also they can be bought and assembled in pieces (break a piece, only buy that piece).
A shot of the other side. The yokes are held in with a stainless disc and button head screw.
July 8, 2007 -- Got a little work done in the last few days...brakes and assembly mostly.
This is the completed assembly just waiting for a wheel. Wilwood brakes supplied by Spidertrax (you can get them at Summit Racing too), the hubs are Warn 62672 1 ton 35 spline, and the rotors are '87 Suzuki, Napa part# 85965 redrilled for the correct wheel stud diameter. I built my own caliper mounting tabs from some 3.8" mild steel and welded them to the Spidertrax knuckle. This combination was necessary to retain the 15" wheels. If you want to go to 17's, Spidertrax sells a complete assembly including brackets, calpers, and rotors for bigger brakes.
The arms and tie rod/drag link are at the powder coater so final assemble will have to wait til mid-week.
